Artist Bio & Statement
Gabrielle Rose is a visual artist and illustrator based in Saskatoon, Canada.
Artist Bio
Gabrielle Rose was born in White Rock, British Columbia, but was raised in Saskatchewan. From a young age, she was interested in all forms of creative expression, and participated in dance, music, and visual art activities. As a teenager, she developed an interest in dark subjects, such as alternative music and horror movies. It was during this time that she began discovering her interest in creating dark visual art.
After graduating high school in 2012, and failing to find a “practical” career to pursue, Gabrielle attended the Albert College of Art + Design for a year. This proved to be challenging at the time, and she returned home to continue her artistic endeavors on her own terms.
Gabrielle officially launched her pursuit of her artistic career in 2015. She started selling her creations at local art markets and festivals, and began making a name for herself in the local arts community of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At this time, the themes in her artwork began to solidify; horror, anatomy, and occult. Her work is also largely inspired by her taste in music, and all things gloomy and morose. Currently, Gabrielle works mainly with ink to create black and white illustrations (often stippled), but she also enjoys creating with acrylic paint and sculpting.
In 2018, Gabrielle created Dark Market YXE, Saskatoon’s first art market catering specifically to those with dark and alternative interests. The market featured other local creators who create “strange and unusual” goods.
Gabrielle has also taken her creative process to the internet when she began live streaming on Twitch in 2019. During her streams she enjoys connecting with individuals from around the world and sharing a behind the scenes look into the creation of her work from her home studio.
Gabrielle currently resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with her husband, Justin, and their two shelter rescue cats, Odysseus and Wicca.
Artist Statement
Gloomy and morose is my sunshine and rainbows.
My artwork explores the area that I believe beauty is often overlooked: darkness. With the main themes of horror, anatomy, and occult, I create work that celebrates these unsettling concepts.
Ink is my favorite medium as it is not only very visually striking, but its appearance also harkens back to engravings made in the Victorian era. This time period and its decor are another large inspiration to my work.
At the end of the day, the point of my work is to add more of what I love to the world, and supply more of it to those who share in my passions.
